Roughly twenty percent of Dot and the Kangaroo is a story for children.

The other eighty percent is an indictment of their parents.

The story is told in large part by talking animals able to be heard by humans thanks to magic berries. What the animals have to say is magic in itself, firmly and fairly condemning humans as cruel and often not very bright. (The fact that I had this book in the house for decades without reading it tends to confirm the animals' latter judgment.)

The core story is about a small girl lost in the Australian bush, then rescued and protected by a kangaroo. As they jointly search for Dot's home, they encounter Australia's strange fauna that are not reluctant to tell Dot what they think of her people, eventually putting her on trial.

This is a wise and sober book, a ringing nineteenth century ecological defense. Its stated mission, "improved humans," has proven stubbornly illusive across history. The book, of course, is a charming parable and its mission does seems nearly impossible. Still ... there is always at least an outside chance that perhaps some humans might be a just a little improved by reading Dot and the Kangaroo.

Dot and the Kangaroo Ethel C Pedley 9781161428957 Books Reviews

Dot and the Kangaroo is a book that I grew up with. It is a beautiful children's book about a girl in the australian outback. The illustrations are beautiful and the story is very exciting, but can be just a little bit scary in parts, so I would probally wait until the child is 4-5 to read it to them. It is a wonderful book and also is a great way to expose children to different cultures and animals. I am definately going to read it to my daughter once she is old enough.
A good children's bush tale, complete with violence and death, but, of course, a happy ending, with a conservation theme. A little girl gets lost in the bush, and a kangaroo, looking for her own child, befriends her, and shows her a fruit she can eat to gain the ability to talk to all the bush wildlife.
I was disappointed with the book because it contained no pictures for the small children to look at when being read the book.
I also expected a paper folder cover to protect the book. The book hard cover is plain, drab and grey in colour. Not very exciting for a young child.
Overall very disappointed
This lovely children's book is out of print. It is a beautiful story of a little girl who becomes lost in the Australian bush and is befriended by a kangaroo. The Kangaroo helps Dot find her way home. It held me spell bound as a 7 year old. It was my favourite book. This book is well worth the search for your 7 year old.
very good product- cover picture is a little blurry, but I am enjoying reading this book. Also love the movie!
I would recommend this product.
This was a favourite story from my daughter's childhood and is still as delightful as I remember. It would be a good story to read by chapters at bedtime or with a grandparent.
