I've been through many books on the revolution. This book provided the most insightful understanding of the mind-set of the king, parliament, and the colonials who were their rights a British men. It's light on the the battlefield strategy and the intricacies of the various skirmishes. But I left having a great feel for what was truly driving this historical period. By the way, the book is from 1891, not to be mislead by the 1992 published notation.

Engrossing and filled with information that I hadn't been aware of in my my prior reading. This is a great book that should be widely reissued, especially for New York State residents who are often not cognizant of the critical history played out in their backyards. Tom Wills
I just wanted to learn a little more about the Revolutionary war, and this was offered free on . Wow, I got an education! This is a well written and scholarly blow-by-blow of the entire period, with insights as to why things were done on both sides of the Atlantic. Written barely 100 years after the war, the author had reference to documents that would be very hard to obtain now. I enjoyed the language and idioms of writing in the 1800's, as well as the author's input as to personalities of individuals. It was interesting to reflect on how much things have changed in our country, and how some things (like ignorant politicians) remain the same.
This was much more than I expected, I really enjoyed it.
Fiske provides great detail and obviously put considerable research into the writing of this book. I enjoyed the background leading up to events already known to me. Fiske also fleshes out many American Revelation events of which I had only a general knowledge.
The book goes through series of chapters for the history of The United States and battles and leaders of Greene and George Washington and Benidict Arnold. Also thanks to the French who helped us out at Yorktown.
Quick comment rather than a review.
I'm Australian and reading something else recently I realised I knew little of the history of the American Revolution. This book covered everything I wanted to know and more. I was very impressed with the background details and personnel interactions relating to the various battles between the Americans and the British and I had no knowledge of the role the French played in the long and complex conflict.
Definitely worth 5 stars to me.
This is a history of the American Revolution was written right after the Civil War, and this author had some very interesting insights. The history was fairly strong, by the author went on some rabbit trails. In some ways, it was interesting to see the effect on the rest of the world, but at other times felt like the author was rambling.
I've read many books about the American Revolution written by contemporary authors, but I found this 19th century book fascinating.
Mr.. Fiske provides a well written and detailed account of the American Revolution and includes many back stories. I couldn't stop reading it.
As another reviewer mentioned, there were sections missing, but it was easy to fill in some of the gaps and the material still kept my interest.
I'd recommend this book to anyone interested in American history, it was a great read.
